Congratulations to the SAY It Proud Award Winners!

Six young people were honored with S.A.Y. It Proud Awards at the Youth
Performance Showcase at Barrington Stage Co on March 3rd. The
Pittsfield Prevention Partnership (PPP) believes that our community
values the good choices our teens make and how hard our teens work. By
recognizing the achievements of our youth, we help to create the kind of
healthy and positive community that prevents kids from turning to
substance use. Winners received a teen membership to the Pittsfield
Family YMCA, and gift cards courtesy of Berkshire Bank and Greylock
Federal Credit Union. The winners were:
1. Sheila Atiemo: Nominated by Kari Dupuis, Guidance Counselor at
Herberg Middle School. Sheila is an active member of the Youth Alive
team. She demonstrates her leadership skills by focusing her efforts on
tutoring fellow students and serving as a member of the Student Council.
2. Olivia Bordeau: Nominated by Marie Ruel at Gladys Allen Brigham
Community Center. Olivia has demonstrated both leadership and initiative
through her volunteer involvement. She is a wonderful role model to
other children at the Brigham Center.
3. Casey Hopkins: Nominated by Jason Cuyler, a Pittsfield Prevention
Partnership steering committee member. Casey is a very focused young
woman, committed to her schoolwork and avoiding negative social
pressures. Her involvement with various activities aimed at reducing
youth substance use has been beneficial to the community.
4. Emery Korte: Nominated by Kari Dupuis, Guidance Counselor at Herberg
Middle School. Emery is a dedicated student as well as an active
member of his community. He enjoys spending time at his local Boys and
Girls Club when he is not challenging himself with schoolwork and
extracurricular activities.
5. Alyssa LePage-Montgomery: Nominated by Patrick Bucier. Alyssa
enjoys helping others, and goes out of her way to do so. She is an
active member of her community and is involved with many different
organizations including St. Stephen’s Church.
6. Robert Wehry: Nominated by Denise Davis. Robert is a hard working
student committed to remaining drug and alcohol free. He has
demonstrated academic achievement, school spirit, and commitment to his
community. He has been involved with his student council and Peace Jam.
Please consider nominating a young person for a S.A.Y. It Proud
Award. We accept nominations on a rolling basis. We want to especially
focus on kids who are making healthy choices and are engaged in
positive activities in their communities. Do you know someone who
deserves some community recognition? We really want to recognize that
great kid next door who is helpful and involved in the community, but
perhaps isn’t recognized as a top student or athlete. Please email in a
nomination form today! SAY_It_Proud-nomination-form_(7).doc

Once again, six long months of hard work were put to the test at this year's Berkshire Robotics Challenge in Lenox. HMS fielded a strong team of students and at the end of the qualifying rounds, the Blue Huskies were seeded #5 and qualified for the Great Eight Tournament. Up against a tough 4th seeded team, our team fell short in the quarter final round and did not advance to the semis. The kids did a great job and if you see them in the hall on Monday (you'll recognize them, they should all be wearing their light blue team shirts), please let them know what a great job they did.
Team members:
Nadine Billow, Liam Mooney, Adam Shepardson, Artem Dudko,
Katara Mullet, Ryan Wood

BLACK OUT BULLYING: Governor Patrick designates Jan. 25 "No Name Calling Day"
Students encouraged to wear black to raise anti-bullying awareness
In keeping with the Patrick-Murray Administration’s commitment to ensuring all students have a safe learning environment, Governor Deval Patrick has designated January 25 as “No Name Calling Day” in Massachusetts. A provision of the anti-bullying legislation, supported by the Legislature and signed by Governor Patrick in May 2010, “No Name Calling Day” will be recognized in classrooms across the Commonwealth as students pledge to take a stand against bullying. At Herberg we will be wearing black to demonstrate our support on Wednesday, Jan 25th and taking the pledge drafted by Governor Deval Patrick.
Students are also encouraged to wear black as a sign of their commitment to "Black Out Bullying" in schools January 25.
“In my role as Governor and as a father of two daughters, I firmly believe that every child should come to school knowing that they are safe and free from bullying,” said Governor Patrick. “No Name Calling Day will remind us of the type of vigilance we should exhibit every day to ensure our students are free from the dangers and distractions of bullying.”
"We need to foster safe environments for students, and 'No Name Calling Day' is an initiative to help raise awareness that bullying should not be tolerated," said Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray. "I hope that on this day and throughout the year, students feel protected and safe in their schools and communities."
Students will also have the opportunity to sign “No Name Calling Day” banners that will be created at each school to publicly express their commitment to preventing bullying. Working with superintendents and school leadership, members of the Governor’s Statewide Youth Council will help lead efforts in their greater communities to Black Out Bullying.

Opening Day is Near
The temperatures are finally starting
to drop into the snowmaking ranges at night. The long range forecast is
now looking promising for snowmaking to begin on or around Wednesday,
November 30, with cold nights to follow. This cold air will allow us to
fire up the snow guns for some night time snowmaking with possibilities
of around-the-clock snowmaking over the following weekend. With that
said, it is a long range forecast and we all know it can change one way
or another and probably will. Our earliest estimated opening day at this
point would be Saturday, December, 3, but could likely be the following
week or weekend. Keep your eyes on the thermometer and on Bousquet, the
snow guns will be firing soon!

- After school (2:30-?), in room 101, Friday, October 14th the students (and any parent/guardian that wishes to attend) from the Herberg Middle School/Pittsfield Music Program will have the unique opportunity to meet and learn from an up and coming Jazz musician, Ms. Grace Kelly.
- A little bit about Grace Kelly:
- When it comes to saxophonist/vocalist/composer/lyricist/arranger Grace Kelly, people seem to be divided into two groups: those who marvel at her proficiency, creativity and ever- accelerating growth, and those who have yet to encounter the 19-year-old wunderkind. The ranks of the former category are growing by the day. Trumpeter and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis was so impressed with Kelly's three-night stand as guest of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra that he invited her to join the ensemble at the Kennedy Center's Eisenhower Theater in Washington, D.C. Harry Connick, Jr. heard Kelly in a master class on a December afternoon and brought her on stage to sit in with his band that night. Since then, Kelly has been voted "Best Jazz Act" in Boston four consecutive years in the FNX/Phoenix Best Music Poll, received the ASCAP Foundation's Young Jazz Composers Award in 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011 and won "Jazz Artist of the Year" at the Boston Music Awards in both 2008 and 2010. The 2009, 2010, and 2011 Downbeat Critics Poll added to her the list naming her one of the "Alto Saxophone Rising Stars", the youngest ever to be named so.
- Ms. Kelly will be in Pittsfield for the 7th annual Pittsfield CityJazz Festival
- The lineup for the festival includes something for everyone: a returning jazz master, the fastest- rising star in the field, a piano prodigy, and the annual "jazz crawl", known more formally as Jazz About Town. The fortnight of festivities takes place from Oct. 7-20, 2011 in and around Pittsfield, the downtown of the Berkshiresîin western Massachusetts. The festival opens on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 7-9, with the annual jazz crawl. Restaurants, coffee houses, bars and lounges will be presenting regionally-based jazz musicians in casual settings around the city. As many as a dozen venues are expected to participate.
Welcome to an exciting year at Herberg Middle School!
